Let me start by using the medical jargon description: Glaucoma is progressive optic nerve damage due to high eye pressure. If not treated or not treated well enough, it can lead to permanent blindness. That is because the optic nerve, the nerve that connects your eye to your brain, is made up of nerve fibers that once destroyed are gone. You don’t grow new nerve fibers back.
The first step is to discover the disease. Glaucoma is a painless disease. It effects your peripheral (side) vision first and then closes in until you lose all of your vision. Most people don’t know they have this blinding condition. For me, a glaucoma check is the most important reason for people to get eye exams. Glaucoma is insidious, it creeps up and over time can rob you of the precious gift of sight, painlessly, progressively and permanently. It is very different from other eye conditions such as cataracts where you know something is wrong because you have clouded vision. That is why it is vitally important to get your eyes examined regularly.
We have all of the latest equipment to help make the diagnosis of glaucoma and to follow the disease so we can help control it from destroying your vision.
