Latisse is an FDA approved prescribed ophthalmic solution used in the treatment of hypotrichosis, which is essentially a condition wherein patients have very scanty eyelashes. The active ingredient in Latisse works to gradually increase the number of eyelashes as well as make them fuller, longer and thicker. The entire treatment takes about 16 weeks though results can be seen after 8 weeks. Plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, dermatologists and doctors who specialize in primary eye care use Latisse to treat patients who wish to be treated for hypotrichosis.
Discovery of Latisse for treatment
In 2001, Allergan used the active ingredient bimatoprost to treat patients with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and found that this prostaglandin analog receptor made the eyelashes grow longer, darker and thicker. In 2008, Latisse, which contains this active ingredient was approved by FDA and used to treat patients who wanted to enhance their eyelashes.
Method of Application
Clinical studies on the subject of Latisse indicate that nearly 78% of women and men experienced a significant increase in prominent eyelashes by way of length, color and fullness. To use Latisse, all traces of make-up are removed and care taken to clean the eyelids well. Contact lenses should be removed during application. A drop of the ophthalmologic solution is then applied with an applicator brush to the base of the top eyelids. Usually this is not recommended for use on the lower lash line as it may sometimes cause hair to grow around the area that is being treated and this can give it an ungainly appearance.
Side Effects
Apart from the common symptoms such as red and itchy eyes, there have been no adverse side effects reported. Discoloration and redness of the eye along with dryness is also common but these symptoms will disappear when the treatment is stopped. However, the eyelashes will also stop growing and revert to their earlier state once the treatment is stopped.
In rare cases, pigmentation has been noticed but this again is reversible. Clinical tests conducted on men and women indicate that only about 4% of the total patients suffered from side effects.
Results of Clinical Studies
During the 16 week treatment period, it was noted that nearly 78% of participants found that their lashes grew longer, thicker and darker. Nearly 106% reported full thick eyelash growth. The growth cycle which is known as anagen increases the phase of the hair cycle which in turn has this effect on the eyelashes. The percentage of increased hairs is significant during this 16 week period.
