How to Have Healthy Eyes Today

November 30, 2010

It was once said that the eyes are the windows to our soul. Therefore a pair of good and healthy eyes shows that our body is in perfect condition as a whole. At least that is what people will perceive. For one thing we can tell how others are feeling just by looking at their eyes. Droopy eyes tell us that person is lacking sleep. Eyes with dark circles tell us the person needs to take a break and relax. But a pair of red shot eyes, that can mean a lot of things. What all of these point to is the importance of keeping our eyes healthy. And that is actually easy to do.

Because just imagine if you wake up one day and you have completely lost your ability to see? What will make it hard for you is the fact that most eye conditions can be avoided if we follow some regular eye maintenance.

Here are some good tips that you should follow to help you have healthy eyes.

One of the best vitamins that you should always take is vitamin A. If you have heard of night blindness, that is just among the eye conditions that can be avoided if the body has adequate vitamin A supply. For this to happen you should eat more carrots, sweet potatoes and celery which are rich in this vitamin. However, if for some reason you cannot eat foods high in vitamin A, there will always be supplements that you can take and these come cheap.

Green vegetables are always the most healthiest foods that you can eat and this is also true to maintain our eyes. Vegetables such as broccoli, green beans, spinach and others are rich in antioxidants which are great in fighting the free radicals that cause havoc to our cells, including those in our eyes. Eye conditions like cataract and macular degeneration can then be avoided if only we eat more of these green vegetables.

There are also some minerals that are also good in fighting off the free radicals and selenium and zinc are among the top. Great sources for these minerals are tuna, milk, rice and nuts. Again, if you do not have access to foods rich in selenium and zinc, you can always take supplements.

Do an eye exercise every hour or whenever you start to feel your eyes getting strained. A little looking to the farthest corner or making your eyes go round or staring at relaxing colors like green, all of these can help keep your eyes in good condition and also make you feel relaxed. You should do eye exercises more often especially if you do a lot of computer work or reading.

Always take a break and rest your eyes more often. Whatever work you do, especially if you are staring at a computer monitor most of the time, you must relax your eyes so as to avoid getting eye strain or those red and puffy eyes. Just closing your eyes for a few minutes is a good way to do this.
